Well, it cannot in itself create shadows on other layers, but it can be used to generate shadows - see this post

This website contains some incredible works of art. I am very inspired by all of the films on this site. Some day I would like to make art and animation like this. I know that I am definitely going to add animation using after effects in my companies videos. I actually discovered this site through video copilot.
I mean... if you could hang these films in an art gallery somewhere... All of these works of art should be for sale.
I particularly like this one because of the use of hand held. I like how the artist took identifiable real life objects and expanded on them through animation. I guess the only thing that would have been tempting for me, if I was making this film,is to take the camera through the loop of the streak.
