Found this on Vimeo. Very cool indeed, I wonder how he did the shadow...

Easy - simply create a copy (or expression-link a duplicate) of your particular comp, make the particles black (with no shading - so flat colour), make the background a 2D white solid, then move the camera above the particles.

Then bring this comp into your master comp, make it a 3D layer, align it with the floor and use multiply or linear burn to create the "shadow". It's effectively camera-projected shadows. Since the Particular 2 supports orthographic views, you could even just switch the view mode in the shadow comp to "Top".
